Tomatoes Hit Shelves as Government Launches Emergency Sale

In an effort to combat sky-high prices that have left consumers reeling, India's union government today initiated a nationwide sale of fresh tomatoes at discounted rates in several key locations.

The move comes after weeks of unprecedented price hikes across the country saw one kilogramme (2.4 pounds) of this essential kitchen staple soar past Rs 200 in many parts of Delhi and its surrounding areas - more than five times higher than last year's average prices.

To address these exorbitant costs, authorities have now stepped in to regulate supply and control inflationary pressures. Starting today, tomatoes will be available at a heavily subsidized rate of just Rs90 per kilogramme across 11 districts within the National Capital Region (NCR) as well as five other major cities including Lucknow, Patna, Jaipur among others.

The sales are being conducted through various channels - both physical and mobile. In Delhi alone, over 17,000 kilograms worth of tomatoes will be sold today itself using a fleet of 20 specially equipped vans that will traverse strategic locations throughout the city while additional stockpiles have been set up at five designated outlets across different districts.

According to sources within the National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF), which is spearheading this initiative in collaboration with state governments, all tomatoes being sold under this scheme are sourced directly from top tomato-producing regions like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. This move aims not only to ensure quality but also provide much-needed relief to small-scale farmers who have been severely impacted by the ongoing crisis.

'Each consumer can purchase a maximum of two kilograms per head at these subsidised rates,' clarified Vishal Singh, NCCF chairman while speaking exclusively with ndtv.com about this nationwide exercise. 'We expect an overwhelming response given current market conditions and are fully prepared to meet demand.'

To ensure smooth distribution and prevent hoarding, strict vigilance will be maintained across all sales points by teams from district administration, police forces as well as officials from the Food Safety & Standards Department.

This move comes on top of several other measures already being taken at both central and state levels - including capping production costs for tomato farmers, imposing strict penalties on speculators caught profiteering from this crisis situation etc.
